1. New York and Brooklyn from Michael_Novakhov (111 sites): Brooklyn Eagle: LIU’s dream season ends with painful defeat

You’d think nearly a quarter of a century of guiding the LIU-Brooklyn softball team would prepare head coach Roy Kortmann for losses like the one his top-seeded squad suffered Saturday afternoon here in Downtown Brooklyn.

But some defeats resonate more than others.

“Tough loss, this one hurts” Kortmann told the Eagle after the Blackbirds saw their dreams of an NCAA Tournament bid derailed by No. 2 St. Francis University with a heartbreaking 8-6 defeat in the Northeast Conference title game at LIU Field.

As much as it must have pained Kortmann to see his surprising young team stopped a single win shy of capturing the program’s 11th conference crown during his 24-year tenure here, the Blackbirds still have plenty to be proud of and hopeful for going forward.

“Really good team this year. 36 wins. Third most in our history,” he noted after LIU finished a sparkling 36-17, including a 14-2 mark in conference play and 13-2 record at “The Bird Cage” here in Brooklyn.

The Blackbirds entered Saturday’s action needing two wins over the defending two-time champion Red Flash to capture their first NEC title since 2016 in the four-team, double-elimination tournament.

They got half that mission accomplished behind the brilliant pitching of redshirt junior Tallie Woodson, who limited SFU to a run on four hits with four strikeouts and no walks in a complete-game, seven-inning gem that forced a winner-take-all finale.

Sophomore center fielder Ryleigh Bermea capped an outstanding NEC Tournament with a two-run homer in Game 7 against SFU, sparking a near epic comeback by the LIU-Brooklyn Blackbirds. Photo Courtesy of LIU-Brooklyn Athletics

Senior first baseman Schae Dickson sparked the offense in the 6-1 Game 6 win, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

She belted a two-run homer in the fifth inning to break open a tight 2-1 contest and added a two-run single in the sixth.

Woodson was back on the hill for the final contest, but she was reached for five runs on six hits over the first three frames as LIU fell into an early hole.

Even NEC Pitcher of the Year Elena Valenzuela, the Blackbirds’ staff ace and most reliable pitcher, couldn’t stem the tide as she was reached for three runs in the fourth, widening the Red Flash advantage to 8-0.

But much as they had throughout the campaign, the Blackbirds battled back over the last four frames, beginning with sophomore center fielder Ryleigh Bermea’s three-run blast in the fourth that cut the deficit to four runs.

Freshman catcher Alyssa Martinez drew a bases-loaded walk to pull LIU closer in the fifth and when fellow first-year standout Samantha Garcia delivered a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh, LIU appeared poised to complete a comeback for the ages.

Junior Katie Hinkle kept Blackbird hopes alive with a two-out base hit to right in the final frame, but SFU tournament MVP Christina Clark got redshirt junior Patricia Griffin to pop out to shortstop for the game’s last out, sending the Red Flash into celebration with their third straight NEC championship.

“We’re ecstatic, winning the (Northeast) Conference championship is still sinking in,” SFU head coach Jessica O’Donnell said after the Red Flash found out they’d be headed to Ann Arbor to take on No. 15 Michigan Friday in the NCAAs.

“The reaction and elation of the girls and the team is real. We’re excited for the challenge and to show what we can do.”

As are the Blackbirds, who will have to wait until next year to prove themselves as the best in the NEC all over again despite capturing their 12th NEC regular-season title under Kortmann this past season.

“With a mostly freshman and sophomore-laden team, [we’re] looking forward to the future,” Kortmann said.

Blackbird Notes: Despite failing to hold the Red Flash at bay in Game 7, Valenzuela backed up her huge freshman campaign during the playoffs, winning two of her starts. She went the distance in a 7-1 win over The Mount on Thursday in the tourney opener and saved the Blackbirds’ season with a five-inning gem against them on Friday. Valenzuela finished the year with a 19-4 record, 2.19 ERA, 17 complete games and seven shutouts. … Hinkle was the Blackbirds’ offensive MVP during the postseason, batting .500 (8-for-16) with four runs scored. … Bermea drove in a team-high seven runs for LIU. … The Blackbirds, soon to be renamed, will play next season on the LIU-Post campus before returning to Brooklyn when the team’s new field is completed here in our fair borough.

The post LIU’s dream season ends with painful defeat appeared first on Brooklyn Eagle.

1. New York and Brooklyn from Michael_Novakhov (111 sites): Brooklyn Eagle: It’s all about the beans: A Bushwick resident is making authentic Vietnamese coffee

When Nguyen Coffee Supply launched in November, it stood out immediately. Here was the country’s first specialty Vietnamese coffee importer, using beans grown in Vietnam and roasted in Red Hook. But the real gravitas came from its founder, an American-born daughter of Vietnamese immigrants, who set out to build a business on transparency, flavor and cultural pride.

Sahra Nguyen, the company’s founder and CEO, leverages a vision of culturally authentic collaborations to fuel the startup’s steady growth over its first six months. Nguyen Coffee Supply launched its own “cafe speakeasy:” Cafe Phin opened inside the popular Lower East Side Vietnamese restaurant An Choi this April.

The coffee beans inside Cafe Phin have come a long way — they’re grown in Da Lat, Vietnam, by a fourth-generation coffee farmer. Vietnamese robusta beans, the kind that Nguyen Coffee Supply uses, have twice as much caffeine as the more popular arabica beans.

“I really wanted to help change the perception around Vietnamese coffee,” said Nguyen. Robusta beans, she explained, are seen as the “inferior” alternative to the “superior” arabica beans.

Vietnam exports roughly 3.6 billion pounds of coffee a year, but the companies that buy them typically use the beans in “cheap products or instant coffee products,” Nguyen said. “So Vietnamese coffee has gotten a really bad reputation.”

Nguyen grew up in Boston, but made regular visits to her family in Vietnam. Through those trips, she learned about authentic Vietnamese coffee, made with condensed milk, ice, Vietnamese phin filters and the slow-drip method.

Authentic Vietnamese coffee is made using phin filters, which make one cup of coffee at a time. Photo courtesy of Nguyen Coffee Supply

The flavor of the coffee, which Nguyen characterizes as “nutty, robust, chocolatey,” is an irresistible and unique factor. But when she moved to Bushwick six years ago, right into the heart of the specialty coffee scene, she realized that everyone else had a different understanding of Vietnamese coffee.

“The trend has been largely light roast and 100 percent arabica, which tends to be more of the fruity, citrus, flora profile. People were kind of treating coffee like a tea,” Nguyen explained.

In the U.S. version of Vietnamese iced coffee, flavors were either touched with chicory or cut with butter and artificial flavors, à la Trung Nguyen-produced beans.

“Those were the only two options. I realized neither offered a fresh roasted Vietnamese coffee bean,” she said. “And so that’s when I thought about importing green beans from Vietnam and then fresh roasting in Brooklyn. With the coffee culture here in New York and the U.S., fresh-roasted coffee is important to people.”

How does someone who has never roasted coffee before build a business revolving around international imports from scratch? Nguyen credits, at least in part, Brooklyn’s coffee culture. She crowdsourced input from Vietnamese-American friends, other coffee roasters, and took some roasting classes.

At Nguyen Coffee Supply and Cafe Phin, customers get a choice: 100 percent robusta beans, or a half-and-half mix of robusta and arabica. Baristas offer non-dairy alternatives in addition the traditional condensed milk, and the menu includes everything from classic drips and cold brews to a coconut coffee and Ube Iced Latte.

As Nguyen envisioned, it’s all about the bean: “you could enjoy it any way that you choose, just as you would use an Ethiopian bean or a Colombian bean.”

The response so far has been “intense, but filled with joy,” she said. Vietnamese Americans tell her they feel seen, Asian Americans are proud of the representation, and coffee drinkers of all varieties form lines out the door in anticipation of something new.

“Nguyen Coffee Supply has a very strong storytelling angle to it,” Nguyen noted. “Because it’s not just about selling coffee, but selling coffee and using the platform of coffee to talk about the stories of the Vietnamese experience, the Vietnamese economy, maybe corporate exploitation, about how to increase sustainability and transparency, how to talk about representation and visibility and community empowerment.

“Now, when I’m seeing other people share this story and talk about this story, sharing the narrative of Vietnamese coffee and culture and production in a positive way, here and in Vietnam, is incredible.”

Jamaicans at home had at least three reasons to revel to reggae music last weekend when significant and historic events coincided for a celebration of the beat that was birthe on the island.

On May 11, the 38th anniversary date since Robert Nesta Marley made his transition, the International Reggae and World Music Awards, IRAWMA returned to the island for the fourth time since it was established and also memorialized the avowed king by celebrating its 37th anniversary in the capital city of Kingston.

Some of the most prominent recorders attended the gala to pay tribute at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in New Kingston, among them the revered Rita Marley, Bounty Killa, Beenie Man, Mutabaruka, Spice, D’Angel, Tony Rebel, Koffee and Olivia Grange, the nation’s minister of culture, entertainment, gender and sports.

First celebrated in Chicago, Illinois one year after the May 11, 1981 passing of the legend, IRAWMA is reputed for hosting ceremonies in New York, Florida, New Orleans, Louisiana, Port of Spain, Trinidad, Atlanta, Georgia, Montego Bay and Ocho Rios with a gala black-tie ceremony that rewards achievers of the genre.

This year’s outing coincided with the eve of Mothers’ Day commemorations and a plethora of activities booked to laud women and their life-giving role.

A red-carpet, celebrity exhibition highlighted arrivals to the New Kingston-based Pegasus Hotel where heads of states, diplomats and even the Queen of England has visited.

Greeted by Ephraim Martin, Chicago resident and founder of the awards — top achievers of the genre, along with government officials donned red, gold and green, the colors associated with the music as well as Rastafarians, in display of the music they regard to be the music favored by kings.

Co-hosted by Koffee and Tony Rebel, the gala affair honored 32 talents in as many categories with special honors of distinction awarded to significant, outstanding individuals.

The best of the best included 2018 Grammy winner Shaggy who received the most nominations. He was voted in five categories but was unable to attend due to international bookings in promotion of his new album “Wha Ah Gwaan.”

Sean Paul and Koffee received the next highest with four.

Reggae king, Robert Nesta “Bob” Marley was awarded a posthumous honor naming him more than king but Emperor of Reggae.

His widow Rita accepted the coveted honor and seemed more than enthused when an African dancer gyrated as she watched a performance. Recipients of special achievement awards included: civil rights activist Rev. Jesse Jackson, singer Beres Hammond, Reggae Sumfest producer Josef Bogdanovich, crooner Freddy McGregor and Marley’s acclaimed I-Three backup singers Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt and Marcia Griffith.

Griffith was unable to accept her award because of her current extended tour in Europe. She is now in Germany.

Olivia Grange was also distinguished with a special award.

Artist manager Clifton “Specialist” Dillon was awarded an honorable acknowledgement for his role in steering the careers of numerous reggae artists to prominence. Dillon was on business in China and could not attend.

Martin said an unprecedented three quarters of a million votes were casted by reggae and world music lovers from all over the world who logged onto the irawma.com web portal.

RWANDA HIGHLIGHTS DANCEAFRICA FESTIVAL AT BAM

America’s longest running African dance festival returns to Brooklyn for a full weekend of traditional and contemporary showcase at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. DanceAfrica, the 42-year cultural, ritualistic expression from the continent offers “Rwanda Reborn: The Remix” that will highlight progress the nation of Rwanda has made 25 years after a genocide recorded the murder of 70 percent of the Tutsi population. The fact the nation’s people are determined to be recognized only as Rwandans and no longer segregated with varying loyalties to the Hutus, Twas and Tusisis is one of the primary reasons Abdel R. Salaam, artistic director decided to showcase the folkloric dance and music in the USA.

Founded 13 years ago, the company has performed throughout the world and won the Best Dance Group title at the Festival of Folkloric Dance.

Throughout their short existence they have been invited to perform in Spain, South Africa, Gabon, Turkey, Singapore, Russia and Nigeria.

In addition to the Gilman Opera House performances from May 24-27, the perimeter of the landmark BAM will be transformed to represent an African marketplace.

Vendors from across the country and the African continent ensure that the bazaar offer food, fabrics, fashion, jewelry, music, artifacts and rare African crafts at a premium.
