Trump fetes sumo champ in Japan before grappling with trade | US news

On one side of the sumo ring stood a tall, hefty man with an unconventional hairstyle, bowing and smiling as the crowd applauded; opposite Donald Trump stood a professional wrestler, who on Sunday became the first recipient of a winner’s trophy awarded by the US president during his state visit to Japan.
Trump had been spared the agony of watching the last five bouts of the 15-day tournament in the customary manner – seated cross-legged on a thin cushion. Instead, sumo authorities broke with tradition and provided near-ringside armchairs for the president and the first lady, Melania, and the Japanese prime minister, Shinzō Abe, and his wife, Akie.
The presentation of the “President’s Cup” before a sellout crowd at the Ryōgoku Kokugikan stadium – the ancient sport’s spiritual home in Tokyo – is one of several gestures Abe hopes will put Trump in a conciliatory mood before they hold potentially difficult talks on trade and North Korea on Monday.
Trump, a fan and former promoter of the less tradition-bound WWE wrestling, entered the arena, stepped on to the dohyo ring and bowed at Asanoyama, a relatively unknown Japanese wrestler celebrating his first tournament victory. Trump congratulated him for his “outstanding achievement”. The wrestler later said he was “overjoyed” to have received Trump’s eagle-topped trophy, standing 54 inches tall and weighing about 70lbs.
The sumo crowd of 11,500 had been instructed to applaud the VIPs’ arrival and warned not to hurl their seat cushions into the ring – a traditional show of appreciation for a particularly exciting bout or when a high-ranking wrestler suffers a shock defeat.
Some in the crowd shook hands with Abe and Trump as they left to join their wives at a robatayakirestaurant for a casual dinner of meat, fish and vegetables cooked over charcoal. Kyodo news agency noted the president’s love of beef but added that, were he to be more adventurous, the restaurant’s menu included such Japanese delicacies as “salmon roe with grated radish and marinated sea cucumber guts”.
Abe and Trump began the first day of a largely policy-free four days with a round of golf just outside Tokyo, close to the epicentre of a strong earthquake that shook the capital about an hour before Trump’s arrival on Saturday afternoon.
The leaders, playing their fifth round of golf since Trump became president, practised their swings in front of photographers before teeing off. Abe later posted a selfie with Trump from the course, where they were joined by the veteran Japanese professional Isao Aoki.
No scorecard information was provided, and it is not clear if Trump has ever used the $3,755 gold-plated club Abe gave him when he visited the then president-elect in New York in late 2016.
Abe’s attempts to win over the mercurial president have continued – he reportedly nominated Trump for the Nobel peace prize for his work to open up a dialogue with North Korea – and on Sunday included a post-golf lunch of double cheeseburgers made with US beef. On Monday, Trump will become the first world leader to greet Japan’s new emperor, Naruhito, and his wife, empress Masako.
Japan is desperate to avoid a repeat of the trade friction between China and the US, and the damage to its economy that would result if Trump makes good on a threat to impose tariffs on Japanese cars and auto parts
While Trump will reportedly not push for a bilateral trade deal until after Japanese upper house elections in July, he attacked what he regards as the US’s unfair trade imbalance with Japan, promising it would become “a little bit more fair” after a deal is concluded.
“With this deal we hope to address the trade imbalance, remove barriers to United States exports, and ensure fairness and reciprocity in our relationship,” he told business leaders after arriving in Tokyo on Saturday evening. “And we’re getting closer.”
The leaders will also discuss North Korea’s nuclear programme, a day after Trump appeared to contradict his national security adviser, John Bolton, over the gravity of Pyongyang’s recent missile tests.
On Saturday, Bolton had called the launches a violation of UN security council resolutions, but on Sunday Trump tweeted: “North Korea fired off some small weapons, which disturbed some of my people, and others, but not me.” He added that he had “confidence” that the North’s leader, Kim Jong-un, “will keep his promise to me” over denuclearising the Korean peninsula.
Japan, though, which is within range of North Korean short-range missiles, is keen to maintain pressure on Kim, although the prospects for a third US-North Korea summit look dim after the failure of talks in Hanoi in February.
Abe recently shifted his stance on engagement with North Korea, saying he would be willing to meet Kim without preconditions, having previously refused to talk unless significant progress was made on resolving the cold war abductions of Japanese citizens by North Korean agents.
On Monday, Trump will meet he families of some of the victims, who were taken to North Korea in the 1970s and 80s to teach their language and customs to the regime’s spies.

Donald Trump | The Guardian: Trump becomes first US president to watch sumo wrestlers battle it out in Japan – video

Donald Trump presented a trophy to the winner of a sumo tournament, turning to personal diplomacy for the second day of a Japan visit shadowed by tough trade talk. But it was all smiles as the two leaders watched giant sumo wrestlers grapple on the final day of a 15-day tournament won by rising star Asanoyama. Trump, the first US president to watch sumo in the sport’s homeland, waved to the audience as he entered the hallowed Kokugikan arena and then saluted them with applause as they waved and raised their phones to take photos.

Study In Political Criminology: Intelligence Operation As A Repetition Compulsion: Analysis Of “Kaiser Trump” Political Archetype As The New Abwehr’s psychological replay of The Lost Object, Kaiser Wilhelm II.

The Resolution of the collective “intra-psychic” conflict is expressed in the symbolic psychological Undoing of the effects and the World Order post-WWII, and also in quite real life dimensions, visible and open, and also the invisible and hidden efforts to restore the Germany’s stature on the World stage.

“The kaiser’s most authoritative biographer, John Röhl, proposed that the roots of the problem were neurological and grew from an insufficiency of oxygen during birth. The resulting minor cerebral damage, Röhl argued, though asymptomatic when Wilhelm was born, laid the foundations for a “secondary neuroticisation” in his childhood and adolescence.”

M.N.: This is one of the most important and interesting aspects, common to “both Kaisers”: Trump and Wilhelm II. Rohl’s opinion quoted above does have its merits: both historical personas appear to have a somewhat similar psychopathological profile, consistent with the elements of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, with the Affect cyclicity (“Cyclothymia, Bipolar Disorder, Depression”, etc.), subtle cognitive deficits pointing to some light early organicity, either hereditary or induced. For example, both could be the “Forceps Children”, delivered with the help of Obstetrical Forceps or the products of other similar factors. This line of thought is confirmed further by the Kaiser’s physical deformities at birth:

“Wilhelm’s left arm, crippled due to perinatal complications, became the topic of lengthy elaborations; an aspect that was, notably, conspicuously absent from the diagnoses appearing in Germany after the end of the war.

33 “

The Diagnostic Historical Nostalgia of the historically part-Jewish – part-Gay New Abwehr for their role model: part-Jewish – part-Gay Last Kaiser reveals itself in their Psychodrama-Psychohistory Reality Show and the Intelligence Operation as the Experiment: The Operation Trump 1944 – 2020. – M.N. – 11:07 AM 5/25/2019

“Freud lamented in 1915 that even ‘science has lost its sober impartiality; its embittered servants try to extract weapons from it to contribute to the fight against the enemy. The anthropologist has to declare the enemy inferior and degenerate, the psychiatrist must proclaim the diagnosis of his mental defects.’

30

“What was missing from Cabanès’s argument was a link between body and mind. As Wilhelm’s crippled arm was not congenital but the result of an injury received at birth, it hardly fitted the fashionable concept of degeneration touted in the book’s title. The ‘imperial ear’ was a more promising object of study; the attached earlobe purportedly visible on some photographs being one of the ‘anatomical stigmas of degeneration’ listed by fin-de-siècle anthropologists.

It is known that the “attached earlobe” was viewed by the Nazi and earlier “racial scientists” as the “most definitive sign” of the Jewish genetic heritage and origins. It was reported that Hitler experienced a great relief when he saw on the photos that Stalin does not have this physical anatomical feature.

“Hitler specifically asked Hoffmann to take a close-up photograph of Stalin’s earlobes, by which he thought he could determine if the Soviet leader was Jewish or not. Earlobes that were “attached” would indicate Jewish blood, while those that were “separate” would be Aryan; Hoffmann took the requisite image, and Hitler determined to his own satisfaction that Stalin was not Jewish.[37

“In Hitler and Stalin, historian Alan Bullock notes that “He [Hitler] believed these would show whether Stalin had Jewish blood – whether the earlobes were ‘ingrown and Jewish, or separate and Arian’.  He was relieved to see that Stalin passed the test and was not a Jew.”

However, Cabanès had little evidence for this interpretation” (Kaiser’s Jewish Ears), although this question apparently remains unresolved, and the degree of healthy scepticism regarding the Kaiser’s particular ethnic origins and the proportion of the “Jewish blood” in them. It is quite possible that part-Jewish Abwehr had its own opinions on this subject, and these opinions were reflected in their outlook and practices.

“Cabanès’s diagnosis of the Hohenzollerns was a typical piece of wartime propaganda in the guise of historical and medical scholarship, supporting the French Army in their defence of civilisation against a nation of brutes and madmen.”

Trump obviously has a lot to hide | Letters To The Editor

President Donald Trump cheated on his first wife with the woman who became his second wife, and cheated on his second with his third. He cheated again on his third wife (while she was pregnant) with a porn star who blackmailed him for $130,000. Then he called her “horse face” only after she told.
Our agencies agree that Russia interfered in our election, attacking our democracy. If Trump didn’t actively partner with them, he didn’t mind, nor has he done anything to prevent it next time. Our democracy was attacked and our president meets with and befriends the attacker and doesn’t even mention the attack. If this isn’t treason, what is?
Trump brags about assaulting women, called Robert E. Lee, a trader and slave owner, a great general. He called people on both sides of the events in Charlottesville, Va., good people.
He said he has nothing in life to be forgiven for. If Obama did the same things, would he be called the anti-Christ (again) or praised by Christian leaders like Franklin Graham, as he does Trump?
This self-described “law and order president” should follow the law and turn over his taxes, as President Richard Nixon did and you would have to. Supposedly, no one is above the law.
If he has nothing to hide, he would show his taxes and brag about it, like he does everything else.
Rudy Giuliani, his lawyer, said he doesn’t have a problem with accepting future help from Russia. Trump has to win in 2020, at any cost, including starting a war. He knows if he loses he will no longer have Rand Paul, Mitch McConnell and Attorney General William Barr to protect and lie for him. Then we will find out how truly corrupt the Trump crime family is.
Trump, a proven “liar,” has been blackmailed before and Putin could be doing the same.

Parts of the subpoenas have been included in court filings. The subpoena on Deutsche Bank seeks records of accounts, transactions and investments linked to Trump, his three oldest children, their immediate family members and several Trump Organisation entities, as well as records of ties they might have to foreign entities.
Deutsche Bank has long been a principal lender for Trump’s real estate business and a 2017 disclosure form showed that Trump had at least US$130 million of liabilities to the bank.

It followed an informal request to the bank by Democratic lawmakers in March seeking records related to potential conflicts of interest tied to Trump’s Washington hotel and other businesses.
A lawyer for the Trumps argued earlier this week that the subpoenas exceeded the authority of Congress and were “the epitome of an inquiry into private or personal matters”.
US District Judge Edgardo Ramos, however, found that they were allowed under the broad authority of Congress to conduct investigations to further legislation.

34”

The Global Security News: 1. Russia from Michael_Novakhov (116 sites): Voice of America: Experts: Combine US, S. Korean Missile Systems to Boost Defense vs. North

Kim Dong-hyun of the VOA Korean Service contributed to this report.

WASHINGTON — South Korea should integrate its missile defense system with that of the U.S. to maximize the combined capabilities to counter a potential incoming flight of North Korea’s missiles across the border, experts said in the wake of Pyongyang’s two missile launches in early May.

South Korea’s missile defense system and the U.S. antimissile defense system deployed in South Korea are coordinated but operate independently.

“The whole system would work better if it was fully integrated, if it was a completely combined operation,” said Bruce Bechtol, a former intelligence officer at the Defense Intelligence Agency who is now a professor at Angelo State University in Texas.

Why not integrate systems?

The lack of integration is rooted in regional history. The South Korean government, whether it was conservative or liberal, never merged its system with the U.S. system for political reasons, in part, because integrating it would mean joining the U.S. missile defense alliance in the region that includes Japan, South Korea’s colonial adversary toward which South Korea’s public sentiment has been historically antagonistic, according to Bruce Bennett, a senior defense analyst at the Rand Corp. research center.

Streamlining the command and control of the two missile defense systems with autonomous command and control would cut the time needed to analyze data, share information, and cue the proper system for targeting and intercepting an incoming missile, according to David Maxwell, a former U.S. Special Forces colonel and current fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies.

On May 17, the Pentagon announced the U.S. had approved a $314 million sale of air defense missiles to South Korea.

South Korea’s missile defense system, termed the Korean Air and Missile Defense (KAMD), includes Aegis and Patriot systems, and is designed to protect South Korea from missiles that fly at different altitudes and distance by detecting, tracking and intercepting incoming missiles in the air. Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), which currently falls under the U.S. missile defense system, is also deployed in South Korea.

Aegis, a sea-based missile defense system, and THAAD are area defense weapons that have the capabilities to defend wide areas against missiles that fly high altitudes. And, the Patriot system, known as pointed defense weapons, can intercept missiles directed against smaller areas such as air base, according to Maxwell.

No perfect defense

But they don’t provide a perfect defense that prevents missiles from getting through, he added.

“There’s no impenetrable shield,” Maxwell said. “There [is] always going to be a gap, a seam, a weakness, that the enemy is always trying to exploit and defenders are always trying to fix and find a better way. This is constantly a game of where capabilities continue to evolve.”

This was part of what was happening when North Korea tested a new missile on May 4 that is considered to be similar to the Russian Iskander, a nuclear-capable missile that flies lower than the short-range ballistic missiles North Korea tested before.

“A ballistic missile leaves the earth’s atmosphere and glides back down,” Bechtol said. “This [test] missile does not, as far as I can tell, leave the Earth’s atmosphere. It operates more like a cruise missile than a ballistic missile.”

A cruise missile flies on a relatively straight line and at a lower altitude than a ballistic missile, which arcs up before curving down toward a target.

Russian-like missile poses challenges

Experts said if the new missile is modeled after the Iskander, it could pose multiple challenges and could exploit gaps in the existing missile-defense coverage in South Korea.

The new missile’s “flattened flight path” toward a target “makes it difficult to intercept” with current defense systems, said Michael Elleman, a senior fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies.

The North Korean version of the Iskander does not fly higher than 50 kilometers and can travel a ground distance as far as 280 kilometers, according to Elleman.

But THAAD and the Aegis SM-3 interceptor operate at an altitude above 50 kilometers, and the Patriot system’s effective intercepting range is at an altitude of about 25 to 30 kilometers with the Patriot variant PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) interceptor extending its flight to an altitude of about 40 kilometers.

That leaves “a gap in interceptor coverage” of at least 10 kilometers between the missile defense systems that operate at roughly 40 to 50 kilometers, said Ellemen. “The Iskander spends most of its flight path in this gap, making it difficult to intercept.”

The Iskander can fly at a high speed, presenting another challenge for the current missile defense system.

Bennett said, “The Iskander flies perhaps 20-25 percent faster than the Scud,” a series of tactical ballistic missiles that could travel five times the speed of sound, potentially capable of reaching South Korea in about five minutes, Bennett said.

“THAAD and the SM-3 on the Aegis [equipped] ships should be able to handle this speed. [But] the Iskander flies low, [a] potential challenge for THAAD and the SM-3,” he added.

Most accurate North Korean missile

The Iskander can be mounted on mobile launch platforms, meaning it can be moved and fired quickly.

“It’s a solid fuel missile,” Bechtol said, explaining that the fuel can be loaded ahead of launch “and moved much more quickly than liquid-fuel missiles.” The latter need fueling just before launch.

The Iskander’s maneuverability also makes it difficult for THAAD, Aegis SM-3, and the Patriot system to intercept.

“The Iskander has fins mounted at the back of the missile, which allow it to maneuver during the entire flight,” Ellemen explained. “This makes it much more difficult to predict an intercept location and launches the interceptor on the optimal path for an engagement resulting in destruction of the threat.”

Bechtol said, “It would be the most accurate missile the North Koreans have ever had, so accurate that they could actually fire out … [and] target barracks, flight lines for aircraft, headquarter buildings.”

With the missile test, “the North Koreans are showing us that they have a missile [with which] they can accurately target Osan Air Base or Camp Humphreys in a very real, in a very dangerous way,” Bechtol said, citing American installations in South Korea.

“They were able to keep in accordance with the agreement they made with [President Donald] Trump, and at the same time, threaten the United States and South Korea in a very compelling way,” he added.

When the Pyongyang government began talks with Washington last year, it pledged to suspend nuclear and long-range missile tests.

Complicated political situation

Merging South Korean and U.S. missile defense systems could be hampered by the political situation in South Korea, according to Maxwell. Public attitudes have changed little since 2017, when hundreds of South Korean citizens protested the installation of THAAD at a U.S. military south of Seoul.

“I just don’t see the political will for that in South Korea among majority of the people or the current rule and government,” Maxwell said.

Bennett said a North Korean missile that slipped under defense systems could devastate the peninsula, depending on the type of warhead it carried, “… which in theory could be conventional, nuclear or chemical,” he said. “So the defense would turn to passive defense: protecting people in shelters with masks and protective clothing.”

According to Maxwell, a variant of the Patriot interceptor, the PACT 3 Guidance Enhanced Missile (GEM-T) under the U.S. missile defense system in South Korea is better able “to defeat tactical ballistic missiles and aircraft and cruise missiles” and could potentially intercept the new kind of missile North Korea tested.

“Byzantinism”: The Courtier at his Court[edit]

The botched birth that left Wilhelm II with a withered left arm had almost certainly caused brain damage as well, which Röhl argued explains much of Wilhelm’s erratic personality.[51] Wilhelm’s mother, the Crown Princess Victoria tried, but failed to hide her horror at her son’s withered arm when he was growing up, which Röhl argued explains much of Wilhelm’s narcissism as an attempt to make up for the love that he never received as a child and his damaged self-esteem caused by his withered arm.[52] Wilhelm’s parents, the Crown Prince Friedrich and Crown Princess Victoria were both classical liberals who were strongly opposed to anti-Semitism; in 1880 when the anti-Semitic historian Heinrich von Treitschke was leading a popular campaign to disemancipate German Jews, the Crown Prince and Crown Princess pointedly attended a service at a synagogue to show their support for the threatened German Jewish community and to show their disapproval of Treitschke’s “disgraceful” attacks on those Germans who happened to be Jewish.[53] In an act of rebellion, Wilhelm become an ardent anti-Semite and embraced everything that his parents hated, becoming, as Archduke Rudolf commented in 1883, “a dyed-in-the-wool Junker and reactionary” who hated democracy.[54]

To compensate for feelings of inferiority caused by his withered arm, Wilhelm had in the words of Röhl a tendency to engage in “sadistic” behavior such as having the rings on his right hand inwards, squeezing especially hard when shaking hands (as result of having the use of only one arm, Wilhelm had an abnormally strong right arm), and watching with pleasure as the other party grimaced in pain.[55] Other antics of the Kaiser included attacking his guests with his field marshal’s baton and making his elderly ministers do a vigorous round of physical exercises, sometimes cutting off their braces first so that they would have trouble keeping their pants up during the exercises.[56] On board the royal yacht Hohenzollern on the annual North Sea summer cruise in 1894, Eulenburg was alarmed to be woken up at midnight by the “loud, laughing, shouting, pealing voice of the Kaiser outside my door; he was chasing the old excellencies Heintze, Kessel, Scholl, etc, through the corridors of the ship to bed!”.[57] After one especially strenuous session of physical exercises under the midday sun on the deck of the Hohenzollern presided over by a laughing Wilhelm, Eulenburg wrote: “It is a curious sight: all those old military fogeys having to do their knee-jerks with strained faces! The Kaiser sometimes laughs out loud and eggs them on with a dig to the ribs. The old boys then pretend that they are particularly delighted over such a favour, but in fact they clench their fists in their pockets and afterwards grumble among themselves about the Kaiser like a lot of old women”.[57] The system Wilhelm created around him was known at the time as “Byzantinism” as the strange atmosphere at his court full of material opulence, factionalism, sycophancy and intrigue was so redolent of the courts of the Eastern Roman Emperors.[58] Wilhelm often made his courtiers dance before him and the rest of the court dressed as ballerinas or poodles while blowing kisses to him.[58] Perhaps the most infamous case of “Byzantinism” occurred in 1908 when General Dietrich von Hülsen-Haeseler danced before the Kaiser and the court dressed while wearing a pink ballerina dress, and then felt so humiliated by what he had been forced to do that he promptly died of a heart attack. Others at the court rather enjoyed participating in these homo-erotic spectacles that Wilhelm enjoyed so much. In 1892, the courtier Georg von Hülsen wrote to Count Emil von Schlitz gennant von Görtz that:

“You must be paraded by me as a circus poodle!-that will be a ‘hit’ like nothing else. Just think: behind shaved (tights), in front long bangs out of black or white wool, at the back a genuine poodle tail a marked rectal opening and, when you ‘beg’, in front a fig-leaf. Just think how wonderful when you bark, howl to music, shoot off a pistol or do other tricks. It is simply splendid!…In my mind’s eye I can already see H.M [His Majesty] laughing with us…I am applying myself with real relish to this ‘work’ in order to forget that my beloved sister — the dearest thing I have on earth — is at this moment dying in Breslau…I feel like the clown in Knaus’s picture ‘Behind the Scenes’. No matter!-H.M shall be satisfied!”.[57][59]

The Kaiser very much enjoyed seeing Count Görtz dance before him wearing the poodle’s costume with the “marked rectal opening”. In this court, Eulenburg found his place as a sycophantic courtier always singing the praises of his master, a role he played very well since in his case the praise was sincere. Eulenburg was an absolute believer in the Führerprinzip and believed in unconditional loyalty to Wilhelm.[59] Eulenburg was one of the few friends of the Kaiser not forced to cross-dress or wear ridiculous costumes at his parties as Wilhelm did not wish to humiliate him; instead Eulenburg—an accomplished piano player with an excellent singing voice—would play the piano and sing one of the songs he had written while Wilhelm would turn the pages of the music sheet in front of Eulenburg.[59] Eulenburg always affectionately called Wilhelm Liebchen (“Darling”) and was one of the few who did not address Wilhelm as “Your Majesty”.[59]

The exact nature of the relationship between Eulenburg and Wilhelm has been the subject of much speculation.
Wilhelm often called Eulenburg “my bosom friend, the only one I have”.[60] There is no evidence that Wilhelm and Eulenburg were anything other than best friends. Since Eulenburg was quite open about being gay in the company of his closest friends, and he had been Wilhelm’s best friend for twenty-two years, Röhl argued that it is extremely unlikely that Wilhelm knew nothing of Eulenburg’s homosexuality as he later claimed.[61] In 2005, Röhl wrote “This view of Wilhelm II as a repressed homosexual is gathering growing support as the Eulenburg correspondence and similar new evidence is studied and digested.”[62] The American historian Isabel V. Hull wrote: “Wilhelm never resolved his feelings for Eulenburg, never understood them, and certainly never labelled them…He seems to have remained unconscious of the homoerotic basis of his closest friendship, and, by extension of the homosexual aspects of his own character.”[62] After coming to the throne, Wilhelm largely avoided female company and had a marked preference for surrounding himself with handsome young soldiers, which led the British historian Alan Sked to conclude that Wilhelm had at very least homosexual tendencies.[63] In a letter written in slightly broken English (despite having a British mother, the Kaiser never quite entirely mastered English), Wilhelm told Eulenburg how he detested women, and that: “I never feel happy, really happy in Berlin…Only Potsdam is ‘my el dorado’…where one feels free with the beautiful nature around you and soldiers as much you like, for I love my dear Regiment very much, those such nice young men in it”.[64] Wilhelm went on to tell Eulenburg that he preferred the company of soldiers to his family for only in the all-male world of the Potsdam garrison could he really be himself.[64] Eulenburg himself speculated on these lines, writing in an essay for the benefit of the “Liebenberg Round Table” as his social circle came to be known that a disproportionate number of the men of the House of Hohenzollern over the centuries had been gay, and there was something within Wilhelm’s blood that made him inclined to same-sex relationships.[62]

Eulenburg’s own sexuality has been the subject of debate as well, with many asking if a man who was married with eight children and had affairs with women could really be a homosexual. Eulenburg was close to his children whom he adored, but was extremely cold to his wife.[65] Eulenburg’s major emotional bonds were with the “Liebenberg Round Table”, which celebrated intimately close male friendship as the ideal basis for a perfect society; there was far more warmth to Eulenburg’s letters to Moltke and Varnbüler than ever was in his letters to his wife.[65] Röhl wrote that Eulenburg was not a homosexual in the sense that most people would understand the term—namely someone who has relationships only with people of the same sex—but was rather a bisexual with a strong preference for men over women.[66] In this regard, it is noteworthy that shortly before his death, Eulenburg wrote that the only woman he ever really loved was his mother. Röhl wrote: “It is now generally recognised that people cannot be classified as either hetero- or homosexual…Instead there were various intermediate stages between these extremes into which Philipp Eulenburg and some of his friends surely fitted…Such fine distinctions perished, however in an intellectual climate in which, following the teachings of the Heidelberg psychiatry professor, Emil Kraepelin, ‘contrary sexual proclivities’ were classified along with ‘idiocy’, ‘cretinism’, and ‘congenital feeblemindedness’ as a form of ‘lunacy'”.[66]
